I always get so excited when I reap my first harvest of the season. This year is no different…Really, it is no different than it is EVERY year: ASPARAGUS!!! I spotted the spears a few days ago in their raised bed, but it didn’t look as though there would be enough ready at one time. With today’s harvest, there is enough for about a serving and a half. Luckily for me, I’m the only one in the house that eats it.
This is another opportunity for me to plug permaculture, which is one of my favorite gardening techniques. While I know that 40-something isn’t exactly old, I do know that I will age eventually. Since I’m not all that fond of hard work, I expect that I’ll be less fond of it as my joints become creaky. With permaculture, I can install long term plants which will return each year. There’s no replanting, no reseeding and in many cases…No weeding!
We currently have mulberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, herbs and asparagus as permanent fixtures on the property. We haven’t installed any larger examples of permanent agriculture like apple trees or nut trees. Though we’ve lived here for 20 years, we know that we won’t stay on this property forever. We’d rather plant those wherever we eventually land. Who knows? Maybe we’ll end up planting coconut palms instead.
